"After violating my wife, the robber sitting there, began to speak comforting words to her.. I was agonized by jelousy."
I believe that there is no doubt that the Samurai is the one telling the truth. Samurais are known for their strong character and brawny corporeal. They are respected because of their nobility. In a simple obscure flaw, these warriors chose to commit suicide rather than lead a dishonorable life. In my opinion, the Samurai's claim of honorable suicide is a genuine stand.
I have numerous cogent reasons to support my belief. The victim is the one who is harmed or has suffered from a certain incident. They are most likely to be the ones who are telling the truth because there is no reason for them to claim a fallacious testimony. Honorable suicide or seppuku is in the Code of Bushido which these warriors follow. They believe that it is better to die than to live in humiliation. The Samurai's, Takehiro, testimony was that he killed himself. The robber, Tajomaru, violated Takehiro's wife which lead both the Takehiro and his wife into shame. Takehiro writhed as he saw his wife, Masago, unquestionably affirmed Tajomaru after the incident. He must've lamented so much that he couldn't bear to accept the fact that his wife asked a robber to kill him. Because of such inquitous words, Tajomaru too was shocked of the malevolent desires of Masago. Tajomaru must've thought that Masago loved her husband so much that she would never forgive Tajomaru, but then she asked Tajomaru to kill his husband. Tajomaru answered neither yes or no. Because of this, Takehiro would like to excuse his misdeed. Takehiro although exhausted, tried to raise his body from the bottom of the cedar and reached out for the small sword. He stabbed himself because his image was tarnished. The thought that his wife left him out in the grove was an insult to his dignity.
Many may consider that Tajomaru killed the Samurai. It is possible that Tajomaru was able to kill a skilled Samurai because he too was a notable robber. However, Tajomaru cannot just attack from behind very easily. Samurais are well trained and they can respond to and outside force rapidly. Tajomaru cannot just tie Takehiro in a cedar without a sweat. Although Tajomaru might have knocked Takehiro unconcious before he tied him.
In closure to my point of view, I think that Takehiro's claim is certainly the truth behind the story. I think the honorable suicide is the best explanation to his testimony. We should all respect the rituals and traditions of the past because it is from the past that we learn how to live in the present.
